“At the end of every century, we suffer this,” Ahmed declared, finding humor in the absurdity of the statement. She looked at me, smiled, then let out a thundering laugh scarred by years of unfiltered cigarette smoke.

Ahmed’s age probably saved her from much harsher treatment by the government. It was unsavory to mistreat women in Sudan in public and even more so to harass elderly women. She seemed to sense their reluctance. Lately, she told me, guards had been hassling her about not wearing a veil in public, particularly on the bus. Whenever that happened, she would shout at them, “I’m the age of your mother!” Then she would deliver her angry assessment of the government’s program: “I don’t want to go to your paradise by force! God didn’t ask you to come and reform my religion!”

In the bus, she said, people would begin to clap.
